Ribbons and Decorations
Ribbons and decorations in NJROTC recognize cadets for achievement, leadership, service, and dedication to the unit and community. These awards reflect a cadet’s commitment to NJROTC values and standards and are earned through performance, participation, and conduct.
Purpose of Awards
NJROTC awards are designed to:

Recognize academic and leadership excellence

Encourage participation and personal improvement

Acknowledge service to the school, unit, and community
-
Promote pride, motivation, and professionalism
Awards are presented in accordance with NJROTC regulations and unit policies.
Types of Awards
Ribbons
Ribbons are the most common form of recognition and are worn on the uniform as authorized. They may be awarded for:

Academic achievement

Leadership and unit involvement
-
Physical fitness
-
Community service
-
Team participation
Multiple ribbons may be worn at the same time in the proper order of precedence.

Medals
Medals are awarded for higher levels of achievement or special recognition. When authorized, medals may be worn on the uniform during formal events, inspections, and ceremonies as directed.
Shoulder Cords
Shoulder cords are authorized uniform items used to identify cadet leadership positions, team membership, or special assignments. They are worn only when authorized and in accordance with NJROTC regulations and unit policy.

Certificates & Special Recognition
Some achievements may be recognized with certificates, letters of commendation, or special awards presented by the unit, school, or outside organizations.
Earning Awards
Awards are not automatic and must be earned. Criteria for awards include:

Demonstrated leadership and responsibility

Academic success

Participation in NJROTC activities and events

Service to the community

Wear & Placement
Ribbons and decorations must be worn 1/4 inch above the left breast pocket for males, and 6-1/4 inches from the left shoulder seam for females. Cadets are responsible for ensuring:

Proper order of precedence is followed

Ribbons and medals are clean, serviceable, and correctly mounted
Improper or unauthorized wear of awards is not permitted.
Responsibility & Integrity
Awards represent honor and achievement. Cadets are expected to wear only awards they have earned and to uphold the integrity of the NJROTC awards system at all times.
